AbstractThe Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) is a sensor on board GOES-16 and GOES-17 satellites used to continuously observe lightning over the western hemisphere. To verify GLM return stroke (RS) observations, simultaneous records of 60 cloud-to-ground (CG) flashes in 3 different locations (New Mexico-USA, São Paulo-Brazil, and Belem- Brazil) of the American continent were performed. The observations at ground level were done using high-speed cameras (HSC) and/or lightning electric field measuring systems. In New Mexico there are two datasets, one is composed of electric field waveforms recorded using the Langmuir Electric Field Array (LEFA) and high-speed videos of 11 flashes recorded during the summer of 2019, and the other is from the summer of 2023 composed of 12 flashes recorded using a wideband lightning electric field measuring system. The São Paulo dataset is composed of 6 flashes recorded using an HSC in 2019. The Belem dataset has one flash observed in 2023 using HSC, and 30 flashes observed in 2022 using lightning electric field measurements. All the measurements at ground level were GPS time tagged. The lightning data recorded at ground level was compared against GLM group data (optical energy in Joules) because according to GLM designers, the group data are intended to track individual lightning strokes. The RS detection efficiency of GLM was found to be 43%, 86%, 68%, and 91% for New Mexico (2019), New Mexico (2023), São Paulo (2019), and Belem (2022/2023), respectively. The relatively low RS detection efficiency for 2019 datasets can be related to the initial stage of GLM operation. For the flashes observed in Belem (16 negative and 15 positive), we counted the number of groups (without gaps) after the onset time of each RS. For -CG the average number of groups was 1.6 against 16 for +CG. The higher number of groups in +CG indicates continuing current, which is more common in +CG flashes than in -CG. A complex -CG flash was recorded in Belem using HSC, the flash contains 12 RSs and the strokes touch the ground at four different locations. From space, it is not clear the identification of multiple contacts to the ground. The assessment of GLM at distinct latitudes showed here, endorse that GLM works well all over the American continent. However, there is still room for improvement in detecting lightning from space.
